In the late '80s and early ‘90s, as the prospects of ‘virtual reality’ surged to the fore in all its confused and often ecstatic perplexity, a phrase came to prominence as a way to explain what visionaries and engineers were seeking to bring into the world to a lay public that had little else than the psychedelic culture of the 1960s through which to understand it (and certainly not a ‘technological’ model):
“Virtual Reality is where you are when you are talking on the telephone.”
Today the diffusion and migration of synthetic and modified ‘realities’ outside the typical modes and places where a single reality is habitually sought and found, has become an almost routine practice.  The ecology of our psychic and perceptual universe is arguable severely altered, and often disturbed by it. And yet, this does not mean it is all bad. . . for novel opportunities to escape age-old platitudes of thought and sensation arguably present to the design and activist imagination.
Technologically-mediated realities represent but one of the channels through which the concept of a stable and knowable reality is being reconceived today. Indeed the human senses are undergoing a thorough re-examination and re-construction which has begun to impact many of the assumptions that design has traditionally brought to the world and to the objects of its attention. The fluid assembly of workable images of the world by our nervous systems corresponds to the endlessly transforming and labile universe outside us in which life is played out as an endlessly improvisatory dance. The boundaries and divisions between time and space no longer apply. The desire to limit and to fix simply has no place in our emerging world. Or does it?

Both panels are moderated by: Florian Medicus, Architect, Assistant Professor, Institute of Architecture, University of Applied Arts Vienna
