Industrial Design: Designentwurf I-VI

2012S / Künstl. Einzelunterricht / S20435 / 12 SemStd.

Ort und Zeit

Teaching days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Anmerkungen

The winter semester is an experimental investigation.
The summer semester is an in-depth detailed  investigation.

TANGIBILITY

Prototyping at the appropriate level

Prototypes for telling complex stories; for discovery;for persuasion; for imagining the unimaginable; for creating intrigue, engagement and inventiveness.

includes video, animation, physical models, simulations.

RIGOUR

Students are expected to be rigorous at all stages of the project and on many levels:

on the choice of topic,  research areas should be diverse and broad.

on scientific and technological accuracy and plausibility,

on testing and development of ideas,

on aesthetic experimentation,

on communication strategies and public presentation of ideas.

RELEVANCE

Students will consider and explore where their project work sits in the world beyond the academic framework
This can be done through contact and collaboration with external organisations, experts and specialists. Action research is one method that provides exposure to valuable external influences.

IMAGINATION

Imagination is key.

Students will be encouraged to seek out the unusual and unexpected,

to be inventive,

to consider alternative ways of being, of living and to question many different ‘realities’.

Students will be supported in developing new methods and tactics.

Aesthetic explorations are highly valued and help to create distance.

SUMMER SEMESTER 2012

...a machine to allow an amateur to do something that an amateur has never have done before.

Organisations are no longer required for people to be organised. And amateur's are passionate about what they do.  The change, Charles Leadbeater tells us, is that they want to do it to very high standards. On one hand, this can have economic implications but it can also lead to alternative ideologies and systems. With growing social networks, the diversity of specialist areas opening up to the amateur is also expanding.

PROGRAME
We will use an anthropological model from the film 'The Perfect Human', as a vehicle to isolate an idea,  adjust reality and provide a semi fictional framework to explore the topic; The professionalisation of the amateur in the age of social networks.

The Perfect Human in a complex technological world is no longer a passive consumer but an active producer, not only of products but of experiences and of ideologies. The Perfect Human is passionate, an amateur, creating for the love of it, but creating to very high standards;  an existential being in control of his/her destiny. In 2012 the Perfect Human has a continuous internet connection, the room is boundless, there are no boundaries and there is nothing, only the imagination. Who is (s)he? What can (s)he do?

Design a device/machine which enables an amateur to do something that an amateur has never been able to do before.

Notes on Scientific Models (from Wikipedia):
All scientific models are simplified reflections of reality, but, despite their inherent falsity, they are nevertheless extremely useful. A science model is also a way in which the human thought processes can be amplified. A simulation brings a model to life and shows how a particular object or phenomenon will behave.

STAGE ONE: Sketch & Speculate. Using lo-fi 3D modelling techniques and film.
STAGE TWO:  Make it real (convincing), to a very high level.
either
- a full scale working model
- a complex material model
- a hybrid simulation, using detailed props and film.
