As we grow up skin is shed by humans, animals
and plants alike. Moults (the particles of skin, hair, feathers etc. shed by all beings) surround and connect us.
The moulting process is the physical and natural shedding of the skin as well as a metaphorical transformational process
in which something new and more mature arises while the old and stale is released and falls away. Often times, moulting processes
have a harshness and brutality about them, simultaneously however, they can lead towards relief and liberation. They are moving
moments of con- traction and expansion, of detachment and development.
The immediate moment after moulting is a
fragile and unprotected one, a more than bare body that is only just beginning to form a new skin. In its frail state, the
being may bare witness to what has been stripped off: a detached material, a folded and empty sheath, a left-behind casing.
Following the theme from our 2021 Season – “Healing” – we consider “Moulting” to be the next step: One which occurs both
during and after healing as an ambivalent process of obtaining and wearing a new skin.
We are searching for projects
or project proposals from all artistic fields and genres that address the diverse meanings of moulting. The focus, in this
case, is on moulting as a moving process. What sort of impulse activates a moulting process? What does a moulting process
look like? Is moulting a decision or does it happen ‘naturally’, instinctively, perhaps involuntarily? Where does humanity
stand at the moment and are we in need of shedding our skin? Or are we already in the middle of such a process?
Selected
projects will be presented at the Toihaus-Festival Performance Fiction (19.–22.05.2022)
