Public space is the soul of the City, the place where all
its features come together. It is an area of overlap and
interconnection, the place where the character and
the culture of a Society is materialized.
Public space can be transformed into Active Public

energy, materials, services and finances to catalyse
sustainable economic development, resilience, and
high quality of life.
Today, technological advances are embedded in our
everyday life in such away that they are becoming part
of our surrounding environment.
Objects are interacting with us, building skins are
becoming interfaces and architecture is becoming
an evolutionary organism, able to react in real time to
multiple agents such as the environment, time or user
These technologies are not just available on the
market, but it is possible to find, reprogram and
build them downloading files from internet open
sources libraries, fabricating objects and buildings
with numeric control machines and embedding
intelligence thanks to fast prototyping engines.
Within the framework of “Active Public Space” (APS), a

The Active Public Space project includes several
actions, among them: development of publications,
workshops, a symposium, and an itinerant exhibition.
These activities are developed by the Institute for
Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC ), the
Centre for Central European Architecture (CEEA) and
the University of Applied Arts of Vienna (UAAV ).
The “How to Guide” is one of the main activities
developed within the APS project framework.
It consists in the creation of a series of high-quality
learning materials addressing how to transform public
space into smart public space.
