Roland Reiter Reiter Roland

An exhibition by Roland Reiter, Department TransArts

10 Years Sci Viz Lab – Celebration and Outlook

Exhibition, Performance & Book Launch in celebration of 10 Years Sci Viz Lab Exhibition, Performance & Book Launch in celebration of 10 Years Sci Viz Lab

The Science Vizualization Lab invites you to enjoy a series of microcosms for its 10 year celebration!

The exhibition is a parcours of miniature garden-like objects. What is the origin of life? A minute microbe rather than a big bang? A sound verberating acting the mix of a primordial soup? You are invited into a micro messy world of blue green algae and moss like plant forms. We encourage contemplative experiences rather than one seemingly solid theory to explain all. We look at micro life forms and how these affect life. Michael Bachhofer exhibits Kleine Wunder and there will be prints by biologists Stephan Handschuh, Thomas Schwaha and Manfred Walzl.

Atmospheric Reciprocalities

The atmosphere is where life happens. Trees grow, people meet, memories are made. Underneath soil, above air. Dark, light, dark. The light atmTospheric layer of life covers itself in filaments of actualities. They are stretching their web all over the globe, tying places together, writing indefinite storylines of the present, entangled in the web of actualities.

Baywatch – Collect the Piece, Read the Trace, Change the System

The department Industrial Design at H.O.M.E. DEPOT 2026

The Baywatch project explores how plastic waste ends up in our environment and what role industrial design can play in building more circular systems. Under the guidance of Stefan Diez, students take a piece of plastic found on the beach, examine how it was made and what it's made of, and use those findings to develop three design strategies that could help prevent this kind of waste from occurring in the first place. The project makes a compelling case for design as a force for social change — and a hands-on contribution to a more sustainable, circular economy.

Fire Lips

In Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, Anne Carson transposes the Greek mythological figure Geryon into a contemporary coming-of-age story. Once a red, winged monster slain by Heracles’ arrow, Geryon is reimagined as a queer teenager navigating questions of identity and desire. In comparing Geryon’s turbulent inner life to volcanic activity, Carson traces the tension between repression and eruption:

Geryon sat on his bed in the hotel room pondering about the cracks and fissures
of his inner life. It may happen
that the exit of the volcanic vent is blocked by a plug of rock, forcing
molten matter sideways along
lateral fissures called fire lips by volcanologists. [1]

AI and its Consequences

Artistic Positions on Post-Digital Futures

An exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw with the participation of students and graduates of the University of Applied Arts

Since the end of 2022, the rapid rise of generative AI systems has increasingly shaped artistic, social and political debates. Within a few years, enormous investments have been made in data centres, and new infrastructures and global power constellations have emerged. At the same time, questions about energy consumption, regulation, digital ethics and democratic control are coming to the fore.

Examples such as the virtual AI minister Diella in Albania or the admission of the non-binary AI Flynn as a student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna show how deeply AI is already integrated into social, institutional and symbolic orders. Key terms such as deep fakes, neural networks and AI agents are ubiquitous, yet remain difficult for many to understand.

SOIL & WATER

SOIL & WATER is a large-scale artistic research project and exhibition. The project was developed jointly by Associate Professor Basak Senova from the University of Applied Arts Vienna and Professor Johan Thom from the University of Pretoria in collaboration with the NIROX Foundation.

SOIL & WATER is a large-scale artistic research project and exhibition that unfolds within the ancient ancestral land of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Africa. Developed collaboratively by Prof. Johan Thom of the University of Pretoria, Assoc. Prof. Dr Basak Senova of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, in collaboration with the NIROX Foundation. The project brings together international artists whose practices engage with the fragile and interdependent relationship between soil and water, the two fundamental substances that sustain all life on Earth.

SOIL & WATER is conceived as a modular platform; it opens with the extensive exhibition in November 2025, unfolds through April 2026, featuring exhibitions, residencies, dialogues, performances, concerts, community engagement, and a forthcoming publication.

The participating artists, working from South Africa, Austria, India, Turkey, Ukraine, France, Germany, Sweden, Ethiopia, and beyond, anchor the project in lived realities while extending it into shared imaginaries.
