Expeditions to Hidden Worlds - Science Visualization Lab

Alfred Vendl und Martina R. Fröschl

The Science Visualization Lab of the University of Applied Arts has been treading new paths for many years to make science tangible and visible.
For this purpose, the design tools of computer animation, documentary film and immersive experiences are used in a variety of ways to convey scientific information and images. The presented videos show the lab's most successful projects, but also their development paths and underlying data. As an example, not only the Micro and Nanoworld, but also the path as a destination becomes visible. Size scales that are invisible without technical aids can be made tangible through digital data from our very physical world.

Recall of Earth

Angewandte Innovation Lab

:: KAIROS. Recall of Earth addresses the relationship between humans and natural events. The term kairos relates to natural phenomena on the one hand and to temporality on the other – kairos is the modern Greek word for "weather", but it also means "the right moment". The ambiguity inherent in this word runs like a golden thread through the exhibition. Starting out with meteorological aspects regarding the “weather”, the exhibition also tries to draw a pic- ture of the psyche and its entangle- ment with natural phenomena. The boundaries between different levels of perception dissolve; the influence of the outside world becomes tangible and visible; the illusion of being able to control perceptions falls victim to deception itself.

The writer Bodil Malmsten once said that she hates music because it is the one form of artistic expression that doesn’t take the detour through the intellect, but rather manipulatively, goes straight to the heart. The same could be said about decoration.

Magic Queen [from the series Artificial Ecologies] - 2021

Biennale Architettura 2021

La Biennale di Venezia
MAEID [Büro für Architektur & Transmediale Kunst] Daniela Mitterberger, Tiziano Derme

Magic Queen represents a hybrid environment that incorporates and fuses biological systems with organic materials and machines, creating an ecosystem of empathy and co-existence.  The project explores the deeper meaning of the relationship between nature, technology and living systems favoring the creation of an ecology of non-human subjects. In this scenario, Magic Queen is conceived as built habitat that has the potential to restore and nurture itself, redefining the role of living systems within architecture.
