Regenerative Design Lab at Vienna Design Week

Angewandte x Vienna Design Week

With the Institute of Design’s Regenerative Design Lab, the University of Applied Arts Vienna is one of four exhibiting educational institutions at Debüt during Vienna Design Week 2026: the format shines a spotlight on exciting new releases and emerging projects from (inter-)national educational institutions. It fosters networking whilst also serving as an independent experimental laboratory for emerging design.

The RDL’s contribution to the VDW brings together fragments, projects and artefacts created by students over the last seven semesters. In addition, it presents three student projects from the past academic year and will be represented live with two talks.

The film project XS-2100 showcases short films by interdisciplinary students. They draw on the year 2100 and explore associative approaches to concepts such as ‘XS (x-small)’, ‘access’ and ‘excess’. A collaborative project with the Weltmuseum Wien on the theme of regenerative design explores research questions and findings arising from a search for regenerative design strategies in indigenous objects from the collection. (See the accompanying publication *Regenerative Design: The Weltmuseum as Laboratory for the Future, Harald Gruendl & Claudia Banz (eds.).)

PhD student Zhe Sun (Tongji University) presents the AI installation Distilled Agents. This experimental setting raises questions about design education, design research and the academic system with its peer-review processes.

About RDL
Under the direction of Harald Gründl, the Regenerative Design Lab conducts experimental design research into regenerative futures, new roles within design, and political responsibility in this field. In doing so, it combines design theory and history with individual and collective design practice.

In collaboration with partners such as the Weltmuseum Wien, the ReGenerativa future platform and Vitra, students have so far tested regenerative design principles as the basis for sustainable design practices. This has given rise to contributions, positions and questions regarding design as a transformative practice.

Regenerative Design Futures in India
4 October 2026, 5.00 pm
The Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV) brought together international perspectives on the topic of regenerative design. As part of the exhibition ‘Imagine – Coral Reef. Regenerative Design’ in Delhi, workshops were held with students from Sushant University, who explored regenerative approaches to design. The talk reflects on the outcomes of this exchange, with a particular focus on new approaches to sustainable practice in design, manufacturing and lifestyle.
