The University of Applied Arts Vienna
is starting the new academic year with a new professor of Fashion Design. On October 1st, 2023, British designer
Craig Green will take over as head of the Fashion Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. “It is a real honour
to join the incredible team and students of the Fashion Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and I’m really
looking forward to working closely with them over the next three years”, Craig Green said in his first statement on the appointment
to the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Craig Green MBE established his namesake label in 2012 shortly
after graduating the Fashion Masters course at renowned Central Saint Martins College at the University of the Arts London
(UK). He has since carved out a unique position amongst the industry’s most innovative talents and came to be known for his
menswear. Exploring concepts of uniform and utility, Green’s cult-like runway processions gained notoriety for their dramatic
and deeply emotive qualities, with his collections firmly rooted in the steady development of simple, yet rigorously considered
signature garments such as the Worker Jacket.
Green's work is by no means limited to fashion design, however, but
seeks and finds its way into the arts as a whole. Designs by the new Professor have been featured in a number of major exhibitions,
including the Metropolitan Museum of Art's (New York, USA) two exhibitions China: Through the Looking Glass in 2015
and HEAVENLY BODIES: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination in 2018. The versatile designer also created costumes for
Wayne McGregor's Obsidian Tear at the Royal Opera House in 2016 (London, UK) and for Ridley Scott's science fiction
film Alien: Covenant in 2017.
His accolades include British Menswear Designer at the Fashion Awards 2016,
2017 & 2018, Menswear Guest Designer at Pitti Uomo 94 in 2018, the BFC/GQ Designer Menswear Fund prize 2016 and Emerging
Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards 2014.
The Fashion Design Department at the University of Applied
Arts Vienna:
The unique curriculum at the Fashion Department is not only distinguished by its personally-tailored education
but also by its changing professorship at the head of the department, which allows students to learn from the best. Since
the early 1980s, the department has been led by internationally renowned fashion designers such as, among others, Karl Lagerfeld,
Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Raf Simons, Vivienne Westwood, Viktor & Rolf, Bernhard Willhelm, Hussein Chalayan, Lucie and
Luke Meier, Grace Wales Bonner, with Craig Green as current professor at the head of Fashion. The University of Applied Arts
is sending the most avant-garde minded designers into the world, with research skills under their wings that outshine most
other universities. The fashion department only has one pathway and admits about a dozen students per year. Modeklasse
is shining light on Europe’s talent of tomorrow: recent graduates are Kenneth Ize (LVMH Prize finalist in 2019) and Christoph
Rumpf (winner of the Hyères Festival in 2019), other alumni hold leading positions in the fashion industry, working
for brands such as Balenciaga, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, OAMC, Prada, Comme des
Garçons or Maison Margiela.
