Mental Load and Invisible Labour

How does the invisible burden of organising, planning and caring shape our lives, our relationships and our society? What stories can be told about this, and how can artistic forms of expression make the invisible visible?

The exhibtion Mental Load and Invisible Labour brings together 34 artistic projects selected through an international open call, all centred on these questions. At the heart of the exhibition is the concept of ‘mental load’. It describes the often overlooked responsibility of ensuring the organisation and smooth running of everyday life. This responsibility disproportionately affects women and marginalised groups in particular.

As a form of work, it often goes unnoticed, unseen and unpaid – and yet it is essential. The exhibition aims to make this work visible, to educate, to reflect and to create a space for dialogue.

The works on display span a range of disciplines – from painting, sculpture and photography, through performance, video and digital art, to design, literature and interdisciplinary approaches.
